Put Brussels on the Munsch Map! Thursday, September 9, 2010 7:07 am
Julie's Facebook friend Sherry B. from Brussels posted this yesterday:
"Last year we had the pleasure of a surprise visit from Robert Munsch at Brussels Public School. While he was here he was inspired to write a story with details drawn from the class and his visit. Mr. Munsch has written three new stories and Scholastic is asking the public to vote for their favourite one."
The one with the most votes wins so let's get on the Brussels bandwagon! Get your votes in every day until October 31st! Click here for the Scholastic voting page
Good luck!
Help a local guy win some cash! Thursday, September 9, 2010 4:04 am
Jordan Andrew of Lucknow needs your help.
Jordan is one of 15 finalists in a contest sponsored by Canadian Club.
If he gets enough votes, Jordan will be one of 4 people representing Canada against 4 Americans in an "Amazing Race" style contest, exploring exotic locations, trekking through uninhabited and unusual lands, racing the clock to solve the clues all to find an elusive case of Canadian Club. All 8 contestants will receive a nice $12,500 each, and did we mention, the final winner of the race for the case will scoop $100,000!
Jordan is a supply Geography & History high-school teacher. Check out his video submission that got him in the contest:
9 ways to become more interesting....there's still hope for you! Tuesday, September 7, 2010 8:08 am
These can be applied to sooooo many situations in life, whether at work, at school or at parties. Happy self-improvement!!
9 Steps to Become More Interesting
It's all in your conversation. From listening more to telling better stories, how to become a better dinner-party guest by tonight.
1. Listen more than you talk.
2. If you notice yourself getting bored with what you're saying, stop talking. Acknowledge the situation. Smile. Move on.
3. Know a few historical anecdotes. Like this one: To enhance creativity, surrealist painter Salvador Dalí recommended afternoon naps lasting less than a second. He would lie in his chair, arms outstretched, holding a metal key in his left hand. As he drifted off to sleep, his grip would relax and the key would fall, clanging onto a plate he'd set beneath it and waking him up.
4. But realize that no one likes the guy who knows something about everything.
5. Let people talk over you. Don't think of it as being rude; think of it as an assist.
6. If someone does interrupt you, wait to be prompted before continuing your story. It's a good sign that someone cared in the first place.
7. Drawn-out pauses are the best time for personal non sequiturs. People would rather listen to you talk about yourself than nothing.
8. With people you don't know, limit stories to the last five minutes of your life - the turnout at the party, the beverage selection, the homeless man you mistakenly took for a valet.
9. Never mention your blog. (By the way, you can find ours at www.1017theone.ca)
The Office Glee Club! Friday, September 3, 2010 7:07 am
Every office has at least one of them, maybe more. You know, the person who is always walking around singing something...or sitting at their desk rockin' out to the radio. Here at The One, we can safely say that we have more than one of that person. Could it be the fabulous music we play? Perhaps.... No, wait....we're thinking that's got to be it!
If you can muster a group of crooners, rockers or just plain sweet-sounding singers you just might have a chance against us! Here's the link for Global TV's website contest: Canada Sings!
Good luck! You're gonna need it.....
Back to School! Yippee! Keep them safe.... Tuesday, August 31, 2010 7:07 am
We know you can't do all that you should - or would like to - all of the time. But getting kids ready for school shouldn't have you pulling your hair out every morning or worrying about their safety. Here are some tips to help (with a little help from our friends at simplyhomemade.ca)
Tips for Parents •Find a safe route to school with your kids. The route should be the quickest way to school that has you crossing the street the fewest times and crossing only at intersections with crossing guards. Try to avoid parks, vacant buildings or lots and other places where there aren't many people around. •Use the buddy system when it comes to walking to school. Arrange your child to walk to school with a sibling, friend or neighbour. •Ensure your kids know their home address, telephone number and how to use 911 for emergencies. •If your kids skateboard, rollerblade, cycle or scooter to school, be sure they always wear a helmet. Also be sure to label their helmet and equipment with their name for easy identification in the schoolyard. •If your kids take the bus to school, ensure that they remember to be on time, never run to or from the bus, and stand back from the curb when the bus arrives. They should always obey the driver and stay in their seat. •Invite your kids to help plan for the first day of school. Get them involved in buying supplies, choosing new clothes and planning lunches. It will give them a wonderful sense of independence and preparedness that will go a long way towards getting rid of school jitters. •Be sure to teach your children to obey all traffic signals, signs and safety officers. •Teach your child never to talk to strangers or accept rides from strangers. •Agree on rules for inviting friends over for a play date and for going to a friend's house after school. •Practice the back-to-school routine a few times before the first day of school. Find a bedtime that leaves your kids feeling refreshed in the morning - then stick to it. Practice packing lunches or at least planning lunches the night before. Set out clothes for the next day.
Fall CD preview Tuesday, August 31, 2010 6:06 am
This year, the arsenal includes one of rock's most famous frontmen, a couple of guitar heroes, two guys named Elvis, a teenage country-pop queen and the rapper who ruined her big night. There are 31 CDs to watch for in the coming months.....
(Caveat: The One Morning Show makes no promises as to the awesomeness - or lack thereof - of the preceding Fall CD list)
Don't drink coffee? Use soap! Thursday, August 26, 2010 6:06 am
People are always amazed when they find out Julie and I do the morning show and don't drink coffee.
Somedays it's not easy to wake up so early in the morning...but now it might be as simple as reaching for a bar of soap.
Shower Shock is an all vegetable based glycerine soap which does *not* contain any harsh ingredients like ethanol, diethanolamine, polyethylene glycol or cocyl isethionate. So it's a gently invigorating soap. Scented with peppermint oil and infused with caffeine anhydrous, each bar of Shower shock contains approximately 12 servings/showers per 4 ounce bar with 200 milligrams of caffeine per serving. Caffeine can be absorbed through the skin. For maximum effect, they recommend that you build up a good Shower Shock lather across your entire body before rinsing!
You can buy them from my favorite website: Think Geek
